It’s not always easy for Indonesian golfer to understand all of these English golf terms. Common Golf Terms That You Must Know
In golf, there are some of the golf terms that often used by players or you can see it in the scoreboard.
- Birdie
A score of one digit under the Par in one hole.
- Bogey
Bogey is the opposite of Birdie, which results in a score of one point over Par on a hole.
- Bunker
A hollow containing sand or grass that acts as an obstacle or a hazard in golf game. Almost every hole must have a bunker hazard.
- Caddie
A person hired by the golfer to carry the golf clubs and provide other assistance for the golfer in the golf course. Sometimes caddie knows very well about golf course design and kind of swing that suit with the green contour.
- Club
Sticks used to hit the ball, often referred to golf sticks. There are three types of clubs used when play golf, they are wood, iron and putter.
- Dogleg
Shape curves or arches to the left or right on a hole. This arch is generally shaped like a dog’s heel.
- Double Bogey
A score of two over par in one hole.
- Driving Area
A practice area or a facility provided for the golfer to train their swings and playing some short-range golf. Driving area is often referred to as the golf range.
- Eagle
A score of two under Par on a hole.
- Green
Green is an area with trimmed short grass around the hole or pin.
- Gros
An accumulation of the score made by a player in a hole intact which has not been reduced by handicap score.
- Hosel
Part of the golf club that connects the shaft with the head of the golf club.
- Par
Score in a golf game with a predefined value for each hole. Each hole can have different scores.
- Tee Box
A player tee area where players start the game.
- Water Hazard
Obstacles in the form of water, river or a pond on the golf course. Water hazard can be a natural or artificial water obstacle that aims to increase the difficulty for the players when play golf.

Shooting Terms In Golfing
- Approach Shot
A short-range to medium shot hit towards the green area. Approach shot divided into three types shot, pitch, flop and chip.
- Shot Bunker
The shot hit when the ball falls over the bunker. Golfers typically wear sand wedge to make this shot.
- Chip In
The player’s shot called as Chip In if it manages to put the ball into the hole instead of the green.
- Fairway Shot
The Fairway Shot hit is a powerful shot when the ball is far away from the hole. This shot usually take in when play golf with a wedge or iron golf club.
- Hole in One
A golfer called doing a Hole in One if he manages to hit the ball from teeing ground into the hole with a single shot. This shot is common in the hole par 3.
- Knockdown or Punch
Knockdown is a low shot to avoid trees, twigs, branches or strong winds.
- Putting
Hitting the ball on the grass using a putter or a tool to place the ball. This shot regarded as the hardest shot among the golfers. A putter golf club is used for this short-range shot.
- Tee Shot
The first shot made by golfer in golf. In golfing, Tee Shot described as a service shot.
